Initially envisioned in 2015, the museum had a ceremonial groundbreaking in May 2021, attended by legends such as LL Cool J and Grandmaster Flash. After a series of funding hurdles and delays, construction has resumed thanks in part to the support from Nas and RWNYC.

The video lottery racino at the Queens Aqueduct is also a key player, with both Nas and Resorts World directing the $2 million donation toward the museum, which will celebrate the origins of hip hop.

“Building this hip hop museum is something our culture has needed for a long time. It’s powerful to see a space being created to preserve that history and to educate and inspire the next generation,” said Nas.

Nas elaborated, “Being able to contribute alongside Resorts World to help bring this vision to life is an honour. This museum stands as a reminder of where we came from, and a celebration of everything hip hop continues to be.”

Hip Hop Museum

The Hip Hop Museum is scheduled to open in 2026 at 610 Exterior St. in the Bronx, just steps from Sedgwick Avenue, a site often credited as a birthplace of hip hop culture. This museum will feature a multitude of memorabilia, an interactive experience, as well as a 300-seat theatre.

Nas, consistently ranked as one of the greatest rappers, made this commitment to the museum during The Hip Hop Museum’s 2nd Annual Benefit Gala held on October 15 at Cipriana Wall Street in New York City.

In March 2024, Resorts World forged a partnership with Nas, who grew up in Queens, as they compete for one of the three downstate New York casino licenses due to be awarded later in the year. Resorts World is among the three remaining bidders awaiting approval from the New York Gaming Facility Location Board.

Genting Group, the parent company of RWNYC, is looking to invest $5 billion to transform the venue into an extravagant Las Vegas-style destination. With a full casino permit in hand, the redevelopment efforts aim to establish it as one of the most significant casino resorts globally.

The proposed renovation will feature roughly 6,000 slot machines and 800 table games, a 2,000-room hotel, a 7,000-seat arena, extensive parking facilities, numerous dining options, and a generous amount of community greenspace.

Resorts World’s $2 Billion Community Commitment

In tandem with its $5 billion investment, Resorts World has pledged an impressive $2 billion towards community support initiatives pending the approval of its casino license.

Genting anticipates allocating $750 million for up to 50,000 units of affordable worker housing and another $750 million on a sports and media complex in collaboration with Kenny “The Jet” Smith.

The enterprise also intends to contribute $350 million to the Innovation Campus Community Fund and an additional $150 million to philanthropic initiatives through RW Gives.

This significant commitment showcasing the intertwined fates of gaming, culture, and community support encapsulates the impact of the planned developments in the Bronx and beyond.
