Signing a memorandum of understanding at the 2024 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas on October 9, the American Gaming Association, the UK’s Betting & Gaming Council, and the European Casino Association committed to work together to address significant challenges impacting the global gaming landscape. This partnership aims to tackle pertinent issues including the fight against illegal gambling, promotion of responsible gaming practices, innovation, and enhancing casino security.

“This accord marks a pivotal advancement in our collective effort to fortify the legal gaming sector and safeguard consumers globally,” stated Bill Miller, President and CEO of the AGA. “By allying our unique resources, we can expand the battle against illegal gambling initiatives, energize responsible gaming efforts, and collaborate on best practices for the industry.”

Focus on Research and Best Practices

This collaboration emerged during the ongoing Global Gaming Expo (G2E) at The Venetian Expo, which wraps up soon. The groups intend to leverage their influence to foster joint research developments and speed up the implementation of new best practices.

The inaugural initiative will include a law enforcement roundtable set for January 2025, to discuss the ramifications of illegal gambling on the regulated sector and the consumer risks involved.

This roundtable will focus on enhancing cross-jurisdictional communication and developing actionable strategies to combat the challenges associated with illegal gambling.

Growth in the Gaming Sector

The gaming industry continues to flourish, with the United States leading the globe with approximately $110 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR) generated from various gaming operations in 2023.

Globally, gaming continues to expand, with notable contributions from emerging markets such as the United Arab Emirates expected to bring in around $5 billion annually in new GGR. Additional growth is occurring in places like the Philippines, Vietnam, and South Korea where new casino developments are in progress.

While recovery from COVID-19 is ongoing in Macau, the U.S. casino market keeps evolving, with new establishments opening in states like Virginia and Illinois, alongside heightened anticipation surrounding integrated casino resort projects in New York City.

Bill Miller emphasized the changing demographics of casino patrons, noting that the average age of visitors in 2019 was 50, while today, it has dropped to 42. “This indicates a major transition that we must sustain for ongoing growth,” he remarked.
